The BBC Synopsis of this program:

British Espionage in Fact and Fiction: A programme about the development of British espionage in the 20th century and how real spies have drawn inspiration from their fictional counterparts. British Espionage in Fact and Fiction

A programme about the development of British espionage in the 20th century and how real spies have drawn inspiration from their fictional counterparts.

In the early 1900s, spy novels dealing with the fictional threat of German invasion actually led to the formation of the secret intelligence services MI5 and MI6.

The programme charts how spying in fact and fiction changes from early spy stories like Rudyard Kipling's Kim to the era of the Cambridge spies which inspired the paranoiac books of writers like John Le Carré.

The story continues up to contemporary times with a look at the latest James Bond and Spooks dramas to show how novels, films and television are responding to the changing nature of the reality of espionage. [S]
