Part of the Pop! What Is It Good for? season. The final part in the series looks at the 1980s. In the early 1980s punk-inspired art students such as The Human League and ABC took British pop to the top of the charts. But towards the end of the 1980s, star-makers such as Stock, Aitkin and Waterman and Nigel Martin-Smith turned music into a highly profitable business and churned out hit after hit from their music-making stables. Meanwhile the art school dreamers continue to come up with new and idealistic expressions from Blur to Franz Ferdinand. With Neil Tennant, Martin Fry, Philip Oakey, Pete Waterman, Damon Albarn and Alex Kapranos. Contains some strong language. [S]
